Blood Sugar Test Description
A Blood Sugar Test measures the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood. It is commonly used to diagnose and monitor diabetes, prediabetes, and other metabolic conditions. The test helps assess how well your body processes sugar and can be done using a blood sample taken from a vein or a simple finger prick.
Types of Blood Sugar Tests:
- Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS): Measures glucose levels after an overnight fast (8-12 hours).
- Random Blood Sugar (RBS): Checks glucose levels at any time of the day, regardless of meals.
- Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT): Measures blood sugar before and after consuming a glucose-rich drink.
- HbA1c (Glycated Hemoglobin Test): Provides an average blood sugar level over the past 2-3 months.
Why is it Done?
- Diagnosing and monitoring diabetes or prediabetes
- Evaluating symptoms of high (hyperglycemia) or low (hypoglycemia) blood sugar
- Assessing the effectiveness of diabetes treatment
Preparation:
- Fasting may be required (for FBS and OGTT).
- Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding medications and diet.
Regular blood sugar testing is crucial for maintaining good health, especially for those with diabetes or at risk of developing it.
